It's great to be an MHS Panther!

Oh what a weekend in Dallas. First off all, I decided to sport my Midway Panthers sweatshirt (my high-school alma mater) and that is how I greeted Jenny when she picked me up at the airport. She loved it. We scooted to Kim's house (she's another MHS girl) and dropped off our stuff and went...shopping. (What else do you do on a Saturday afternoon?) I picked up a really cute dress that I'm excited to wear in the spring and a fancy shirt for formal occassions. I don't really need one, but I like to be prepared. You never know when you will get the call-up for a black-tie affair :) Also, we ran into none other than Greg Moss, the MHS class of '97 president. Needless to say, he thought my sweatshirt was cool. We ran home and changed and then met Jerod and Elaine for dinner. The first ten minutes was great but then, a mariachi band started playing and made it all but impossible to communicate without shouting or using hand gestures. We couldn't get out of there fast enough. We decided we weren't full so we went to get ice cream and chatted about old times and laughed hysterically about an old man next to us who was passing unhuman and appaling gas. Why is farting so funny? It really is quite gross but we couldn't help but laugh. Sunday afternoon, Jenny and I both had lunch dates. I met another MHS panther who I hadn't seen in years for some good ol' Texas BBQ. His name is Kirk and he loves to restore old trucks so we cruised in a '76 Scout that he had built up. I literally had to heave myself up into the seat as the bottom of the truck came to my waist. It was a really cool truck though. It was fun to catch up on old times and I'm glad he's doing really well. Jen and I went back to the house and worked on a poster for Jerod's concert. We joked with Elaine that we would make one and we totally did. It had glitter. It was awesome. Jen's friend CJ came over and we then proceeded over to the theater. It was this really cute old theater with a marquee in front that had his name on it. We found Elaine and then waited for the doors to open and I quickly made my way down to the front row. I hadn't come all the way from SLC to sit in the back! Another couple MHS friends came and sat with us. The concert was so good. Jerod is amazingly talented and he put on a great show. (http://www.jerodstarkey.com/) He played a number of songs from his album as well as some songs he felt influenced him growing up. My faves were probably Foreigner's Cold as Ice as well as MJ's The Way you Make Me Feel. My faves from his album are Run, Driven, and It is Well. It was so cool to see him up there doing what he loves.

CJ, Jen and I decided to grab dinner on the way home and just as we sat down, the texts started to roll in about the passing of President Gordon B Hinckley. (LDS church president). I got a little teary-eyed as I thought about what an amazing influence and blessing his life has been to me. I truly feel as if I grew up with President Hinckley and am in awe at the inspired and selfless life that he lived. He left an indelible footprint on the millions and millions of people he reached. And I'm sure it was a very sweet reunion with his beloved wife, Marjorie. We will miss you, President Hinckley. Thank you for all that you did. (link to Glen Beck Tribute)
Monday morning came too fast and I was headed back to SLC. Again, in my MHS sweatshirt, I ran into another gal from high-school and she and her husband actually ended up on my flight. I loved that my weekend turned into a little bit of a high-school reunion. good times. We took off and all was fine until we tried to land. No go. Attempt # 2: no go. Attempt # 3: no go. I kind of felt like Top Gun buzzing the tower. We'd get really low and close to the ground and then all of a sudden, we'd feel the plane just go straight up and gain a lot of speed. I really don't get nervous on planes, but it was kind of unsettling. They diverted us to Grand Junction, CO. We sat there for a few hours enjoying the delicious cheese and crackers and biscoff cookies generously provided by Delta. The stories kept on changing of we're staying, we're going and back and forth. yadda yadda. But, eventually we did take off and safely landed at SLC just a mere 5 hours late. I had tickets to the Jazz game and my friend Brent met me there. It was a really fun game and good win for the Jazz. Sorry Spurs! There was this really cute old man next to me who liked to hit my arm or give me a high-five when the Jazz made a good play. Once he even thought it was appropriate to slap my bum. Whatever. But all in all, it was a fabulous weekend. And yes, Jerod is wearing a Cobra Commander shirt. And yes, I'm wearing the same shirt two nights in a row.

I ♥ Texas! I CAN NOT say this enough. I had a quick trip to Dallas over the weekend and had a great time. Here are a few reasons I love Texas:

1. Diet Dr. Pepper on tap almost everywhere

2. Texas-friendly drivers

3. that southern accent--gets me everytime

4. big trucks

5. Uncle Dan's BBQ

6. old friends

7. high-school football

8. beautiful weather even in January

9. HEB

10. Blue Bell ice cream

11. a place to call home

Mod-Podge, Alley-Cats, & Disco Lights

So the enrichment planning night went really well. I, of course, bought too much food but that is never a surprise. We had a fun night and I think had some really good ideas for the year. Around 10:30, we decided to mod-podge and I had a great time. I'm a big fan of craft projects but I think the other girls thought I was kind of a dork but I think they all liked it. That Saturday I was really lazy and watched 5 episodes of Friday Night Lights--man that show is good. I love Texas and I love football so it's kind of a no-brainer that I would get sucked into a series about Texas football. Go Panthers! I went to a few birthday celebrations that night-Happy Birthday Ashlee & Riley! For Ashlee's we ended up at the bowling alley and had a blast. It's pretty funny when the 15 year-olds next to you are more well-behaved. After awhile, they started mocking our enthusiam but we didn't care. Jocelyn rocked the house with a 197! We ended up back at Riley's house and had a spontaneous dance party in the basement. I love how evenings just evolve sometimes--you really didn't have a plan but at the end of the day you ended up having a fabulous time and you probably couldn't have planned it any better anyway.

will it ever stop snowing? AAGGHH!

too late to apologize

I heart One Republic. Traci and I and her two sisters went to the concert this week and they are amazing live. I first heard Too Late to Apologize on So You Think You Can Dance back in the summer and immediately downloaded it. It was only available on Timbaland's album, Shock Value. Finally One Republic's album was released and I decided to buy the whole thing and I love it. Say and All We Are are phenomenal songs. Traci and I had floor tickets and we braved it for almost three hours, yes three, during the 3 opening acts, but after the 3rd act people started getting really ancy and pushing and shoving their way up to the front. We were actually really close to the stage so we were definitely getting the brunt of it. I've never been more annoyed in my life. High-school kids and UVSC punks trying to start a mosh pit and there wasn't even any music playing. We were body to body and we had to sway with however the crowd went--you had no choice. I elbowed and booty-checked as much as I could but it was pretty brutal. We finally conceded and went and found some seats in the stands. However, we were able to make our own way out of the mess. Some people had to be plucked out of the middle of the crowd by the bouncer guys at the front of the stage--that was pretty entertaining as well. Anyway, the band was awesome and their lead singer is pretty cute and charming which helps. He totally can pull off a v-neck t-shirt and vest. not my favorite look but he looked goooood. I've got an "enrichment planning summit" tonight. I'm hoping to get a chunk of the enrichment activities planned for the year. It should be a pretty good time. I really like all the girls on the committee. I've got a little gift bag for them all and we're, get ready, going to MOD-PODGE! It's very exciting, I know. Our Bishop and his wife are out of town and have offered their home to us for the night. They pretty much live in a mansion so it should be pretty sweet. Until the next time...

welcome to the party!

Well hello 2008! I'm a little late to the party but at least I'm here. I've finally conceded to the idea of having a blog--of putting the little tidbits and happenings of my life out here on the interweb for all to see. :)

2007 recap:

So 2007 was a great year for me-I definitely have no complaints. I’ve kind of been all over the place but I guess that’s the life of a single gal :) In March, Phil & Marilyn moved into a new house so I flew home to help with the move & then went back a few weeks later to surprise Phil for his 60th birthday party. The entire family was able to come & we had a great time together-he didn’t expect it at all. I participated in the annual Duck Beach Extravaganza in May in North Carolina & then spent a few days in Washington DC with my sister, Emily. I joined a co-ed softball league in April and we had two seasons that lasted until October. In July, we gathered the entire clan again for a family vacation at beautiful Lake Ouachita, Arkansas where we had a little tango with Mother Nature & had to sneak in some lake time in between some serious & relentless rain. Later in the summer, I was called to be in the Relief Society Presidency leaving my cooshy job as the “secretary to the Bishopric”. I sent thank you cards & updated the callings board which meant NO meetings & NO committees. I guess it couldn’t last forever! The Relief Society has been very challenging but rewarding & I’m enjoying serving with the sisters of the ward. In August, took a quick weekend to Neon Canyon for a little canyoneering and rapelling. I just can’t resist Cougar football and, at the last minute, went to L.A. for the BYU-UCLA
game in September. What a heart breaker :( However, it was nice to see the mighty cougs beat the Utes and then exact their revenge on UCLA in the Vegas Bowl. I spent a quick weekend in St. George with the fam for the marathon in October (congrats to Les & Em for running!) & then spent a few days at Lake Powell enjoying the last bit of wakeboard weather. I concluded my travel schedule with a fantastic trip to the Big Apple. New York is absolutely beautiful in the Fall & we had a great time taking in the sights and seeing a couple shows. I joined a gospel choir for the holiday season & thoroughly enjoyed our week of performances of Handel’s Messiah-gospel style. It was a wonderfully fun experience & Gladys Knight had it right when she said us Mormons need a little more soul! My job has definitely evolved over the last year & I’m enjoying my work as an executive assistant to 2 partners & 2 principals & as the party planner. We just had our annual Christmas Party which marked the firm’s 5th anniversary. It was a big celebration & I had a total blast putting it together. I spent the holidays with the fam in Texas and loved the nice weather and my favorite BBQ. I closed out the year with an ever exciting "same-faces-different-venue" New Year's Eve Party downtown after enjoying some chips and salsa and chocolate cake with Jenny-Ann and Molly at Chilis. (Thanks Molly for picking me up at the airport) And that in a nutshell was my 2007.
